1)  Y-DNA TEST RESULTS:

Participant Identification:  Participants have been given a 3 part number, such as for example A12 B1C1A12 is the individual participant's identification number/ B1 is the known "paper trail" family the participant comes from/ C1 refers to a specific haplotype match, or near match.  In addition, "Y" numbers are given to represent unknown common ancestors of family groups, and "Z" numbers given to known common ancestors of family groups.  For "Y" and "Z" ancestors, when sufficient information is available, projections will be made of their haplotypes.   Some "X" and "Q" numbers are included.  These are for persons of surnames which "possibly" derive from early forms of Marsh, or potentially related just before surnames came into use, which have been included if their DNA looks close enough to Marsh participants to warrant further investigation.

Haplogroups:  Haplogroups are primary subdivisions of the family tree of mankind, and are determined by testing SNPs.  SNPs are a special kind of DNA markers which are extremely slow mutating, and in most cases have only mutated once in the history of mankind. Haplogroups shown in green, are determined by SNP tests, those shown in red, are estimated only.

Haplotypes:  The term "haplotype" is often used in genealogical DNA.  A haplotype is simply the list of Y-DNA marker scores for an "individual person".

R1b HAPLOGROUP:
Group C1:generally tracing to Cambridgeshire, England, and surrounding areas.
Family B1: ancestor = John Marsh b. 1787 West Wratting. Family B20: ancestor = Thomas Marsh b. circa 1670, lived West Wratting.    Family B78: traces to  Gt Bradley Suffolk, about 5 miles from West Wratting.
Family B108:  ancestors Henry Marsh 1781-1850 & Emma Challis of Haverhill Suffolk.
Family B103: descends from James Marsh & Anne Radford living at Cambridge City shortly after 1800.  Family B96:  Traces to Burwell Cambridgeshire around 1800.
[There is evidence of a Marsh/ March family living in West Wratting as far back as the 1400s.  A Simon de Merc (Marsh) appears to have owned land at "Wratting" in the 1100s.]
Z1: is John Marsh b.1787.   Y1 the unknown common ancestor of families B1, B20 and B96 may be Thomas Marsh b. circa 1670.  There is a suggestion that a Marsh family of Ashdon Essex may descend from a Marsh living at West Wratting in the 1500s, but preliminary DNA tests indicate that the Ashdon Marshes do not relate to West Wratting Marshes in that time frame.   Q213 is a different surname to Marsh, but could conceivably derive from one of the very early variants of Marsh.  The close Y-DNA match of Q213 to the C1 group suggests a relationship just before or just after surnames came into use
.   More detailed analysis of this Y-DNA Clan  is given on the results page at http://marshdna.arrrg.org/DNAresultsextra.htm    A1 tested SNPs P312+, L21-.

MISCELLANEOUS CAMBRIDGESHIRE AREA: Musick may derive from de Mersc, (or de Merck) an early spelling of Marsh.  The surname Musick is first recorded in England in Soham,  Cambridgeshire, in the 1500s, about 12 miles from where Group C1 Marsh families above were believed to be in the 1500s.  Some Y-DNA projections are that this Musick family has a "slight" chance of relating to Marsh group C1 since surnames have been used, but after more markers were tested, it looks likely relationship would be before surnames.  Musicks also have some haplotype similarity to the B9 Marsh family from neighbouring Norfolk.  A Powell family from Mildenhall in the 1400s,  about 6 miles from Soham, has similarities in haplotype to Musicks, and Marsh group C1.  X40 Marais, origin unknown, probably not related, but in Normandy, the name was possibly a variant of de Mersc/ Marris used in England.  Most Marais markers match either Musick or Powell.   X50 Mears/ Myers comes from Bourn Cambridgeshire.  Mears/ Mearsh is sometimes a variant of Marsh, (from de Mersc) and Bourn is near where earliest de Marisco/ Marsh land holdings were in Cambridgeshire prior to 1100.

Family B26 descend from John Marsh b.1835, who lived at Wheeling West Virgina, USA. This family matches Group C1 from Cambridgeshire on a number of family specific markers, including DYS452 & DYS463, which have unusual values.  Earlier origin of family unclear, but Staffordshire has been suggested.  Staffordshire along with Cambridgeshire were populated by Angles 1500 years ago, which could be one explanation of similarities in haplotype, as relationship since surnames is less likely.  Compare with J79KP Molyneux from Wigan on Y-Search, matches on 3 distinctive markers, and has DYS464 of 15,16,16,17, same as X28, similar to A20, & CDY of 37,38 matches X28.  Some Staffordshire Marshes come from Lancashire 6 miles from Wigan.

Family C9 descended from Alexander Marsh b.1628, of Braintree MA, tracing to Norfolk England, and possible earlier to Ipswich, Suffolk, England.    Family C41 traces back via Dublin, to Wales in the 1800s.  The DNA match between A9, A40, and A41 is strong, and indicates a likely connection since surnames have been in use.    Z9 is the likely haplotype of John Alexander Marsh b.1678. Compare with X22 Musick. Musick may be a surname variant of Marsh (from de Mersc).  Differences are mostly on fast mutating markers.  Relationship since surnames is unlikely, but just possible.  Some say Musicks came from Wales, there is evidence they were in Cambridgeshire in the 1500s.
