INTRODUCTION:

A new Y-DNA SNP called L617 was discovered in 2011 in a Marsh (Participant A1 below) in the WTY test at Family Tree DNA.
L617+ is in haplogroup R1b P312+, below  DF27+, and below Z2552+.  The exact location of L617 on the Y-DNA Haplotree can be seen on
the experimental tree at www.yfull.com/tree/r1b/  .  The mutation L617 is thought to have first occurred between about 4,300 and 3,700 years ago,
and around 3,700 years ago the family seems to have expanded quite quickly, with branches in Iberia, England, Netherlands, Lithuania, and Germany
which have more recently spread to USA, Mexico, South America (?) Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Island, Scotland,
Denmark, etc.

Families who are L617+:  The Y-DNA SNP DF27 is a significant branch of haplogroup R1b which is common in Western Europe.
The SNP Z2552 which seems to have occurred soon after DF27, likely within a few hundred years, is found in a number of families with
Iberian origins.  The SNP L617 below Z2552 is found in so far 2 families with Iberian origins, and a group of families in Northern
Europe (Netherlands/ Poland/ Lithuania) and the British Isles.  So far all persons found to have L617 also are believed have the following 7 mutations
(In brackets are SNP names)...

8466862     G>A   (L617+)
15407374   C>T   (FGC14936+)
15092671   G>A   (unnamed)
7506827     C>T   (FGC14934+)
9321347     T>C   (FGC14935+)  (NOTE: It appears one person from Germany may be negative for this marker, put positive for the remainder.  Needs Investigation.)
23332817   T>C   (unnamed)
23387829   T>A   (FGC14937+)

These 7 mutations along with L617 will have occurred in the line of descent from after the person first having the Z2552 mutation, and before
the L617 family split into different branches.  At this stage we can't be sure what order these 8 mutations occurred in, unless we can find
some branches which have some but not all of the mutations.

Given the strong associations of DF27, Z2552, and L617 with Iberia, it would seem plausible that the line of descent where these 8 mutations
occurred, perhaps over a period of 300 to 600 years, this family was likely in Iberia, possibly tthe Basque region of Iberia.  After this period, the family
seems to have split into a number of branches.  At least one branch is found in Iberia.  Another branch which seems to have
had the mutation 6891098 G to A, (FGC14951+) is found in a number of lines on the Eastern England (Particularly around the Cornwall area) and
Northumberland by perhaps 900 years ago.  One Branch from Netherlands also has the FGC14951 mutation, this family may trace earlier to Britany,
and could conceivabley trace earlier to England. Some have been trying to estimate dates for these different branching points.  We will have more
accurate dates in the future, but Perhaps Z2552 occurred around 4,300.  Perhaps the L617 family branched around  3,700 years ago.  This time
period roughly corresponds to the Bronze Age, so berhaps Bronze Age technologies helped the L617 family to proliforate, and spread to Northern Europe
andthe British Isles, as well as remaining in Iberia.  Current hints are that in England L617 might have first settled in Cornwall, which is was an important
source of tin in the bronze age, perhaps this was a motivation for migration to this area.

Anyone testing L617+:  If someone has test a result of L617+ please contact John Marsh at ajmarsh@arrrg.org .   Anyone who is L617 or any downstream
branches is encouraged to join the R-L617 project at Family Tree DNA... see www.familytreedna/groups/rl617/about .

FGC14951+ FGC14934+  CLUSTER 1Possibly descends from a Baron de Tindall of Tyne Dale and Langley in Northumberland around the year 1100.  SEE MARSH DNA PROJECT AT
By some speculated accounts, Tindalls and Ogles have some common factors in their backgrounds, possibly both descending on maternal lines from earls of Northumberland???
Marsh:Marshes generally tracing to Cambridgeshire (in particular West Wratting), Suffolk & Essex England.  There is evidence of a Marshe/ Marche family living in West Wratting Cambridgeshire as far back as the late 1400s, and these are likely ancestors of the C1 Marshes from west Wratting .   There was a Mareys (de Merc/ Maris/ Marsh) family owning land at West Wratting up until 1364 when it passed via an heiress to a Brown family http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=66721 .  A Simon de Merc (de Merk/ de Marcq/ Marsh) owned land at "Wratting" in the 1100s.  There is no evidence to connect the C1 Marsh group to Simon de Merc, or the West Wratting Mareys family, but the possibility of a connection is being investigated.  Current thinking is that West Wratting Marshes may not be direct male line descendants of Simon de Merc, who probably descended from the de Marcq family from near Calais, in France.  Current evidence suggests that the de Marcq family were haplogroup I., represented by a Marris family from Lincolnshire.  After 1200, a descendant of Baron Robert de Tyndall moved to Northamptonshire and Norfolk, and had estates within a few miles of Marsh estates in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk.  Tyndall Q493 has a speculated male line tree to this Robert de Tyndall.  A possibility is that Tyndalls and Marshes descend  on the male line from this Robert de Tyndall some time around 1200 or later, when the Marsh and Tyndall families lived close to each other.
Family B1- Marsh: ancestor = John Marsh b. 1787 West Wratting
On 25 June 2011 a New SNP L617 was discovered for the first time in A1..
Family B20- Marsh
:
ancestor = Thomas Marsh b. circa 1670, lived West Wratting
Family B96- Marsh: ancestor= James Marsh b.1794?  Burwell.
Family B78- Marsh
:
traces to  Gt Bradley Suffolk, 5 miles from West Wratting.
Family B103- Marsh:
descends from James Marsh & Anne Radford living at Cambridge City shortly after 1800.
Family B108- Marsh
:  descends from Henry Marsh1781-1850 & Emma Challis, of Haverhill Suffolk, about 5 miles from West Wratting..
Family B160- Marsh:  descends from William Marsh of Bottisham.

Family B102- Teague
:
Surname Teague.  Possibly descended from same family as Tyndall/ Tindales below in the past 900 years?

Family of Q336- Tindale/ Payne: descends from John Sanford Tindale Payne (Tindale adopted by Payne family)b.1813 Kentucky, son of Isaac John Tindale b.1780.  Some USA Paynes match exactly on 12 markers, but have a large number of mutations difference on more markers.  It is therefore necessary to test more than 12 markers of Paynes to confirm a match with C1 group.
Family of Q493- Tyndall: descends from Charles Tindall b. circa 1662 USA.  It appears this family may descend on the male line from Baron Robert de Tyndall b. about 1120 in Northumberland, who may have been the son of an earlier Baron Adam de Tyndall.   There was a later Baron Adam de Tyndall (eldest son of Robert) who only had surviving daughters, and Tyndall estates passed to lines from these daughters, some of the descendants may have also used the surname Tyndall.
Family B176- : From Yorkshire around 1800.  May descend from a Tyndall family.
