1) INTRODUCTION TO MARSH GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH INFORMATION:

DNA studies alone can tell us a lot, but we can learn much more, if the DNA study is complimented with conventional genealogical research. The primary purpose of the Marsh Families DNA Project, is the DNA part of the jig saw puzzle.

It is not the purpose of the DNA Project to focus on conventional genealogical research, and the subject is too vast to adequately deal with in the DNA Project. However, to give budding genealogists a bit of a prompt, I have included in the following, links to some of the Marsh genealogical sources on the internet. What I have included is a tiny fragment of the material available. Researchers are encouraged to do specific searches themselves for information they specifically require. "Google" is an indispensible search tool, use it.

WARNING: The project administrator for the Marsh Families DNA Project is aware of errors in information on some of the following sites. Even incorrect information gets copied and pasted and rapidly spreads around the internet. Any information found on the internet needs to be checked and verified. However, with all it's short comings, the internet is a wonderful asset to genealogists, and we just would not want to have to do without it! Just check everything! DIGITIZED BOOKS ON LINE:

NOW SEARCH OVER 600 BOOKS WHICH THE FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY HAS ONLINE.

In Sept. 2005, the LDS Family History Library announced that it has begun the process of digitizing & making available on the Internet ALL of the Family History books in their collection. At that time, about 5000 books were available, and they were adding about 100 titles a week. Books out of copyright are being done first.

The images of these Family History books are actually being stored on the electronic servers at Brigham Young University. By going directly to the BYU website to view the images, you are able to full-text searches on each book. You can now locate the small entry on your elusive grandpa that is buried in one of the books that you would otherwise never thought to look at before.

HOW TO FIND THE DIGITIZED IMAGES

Go to the website of the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU at:

On their home page follow the links

Then: "Electronic/
Then: "On Line Collections at BYU."

Click on the "Text Collections" tab & select the "Family History Archive" from the list of collections that are displayed.
You would then normally want to use the "Search All" feature with the "Search All Text" box checked, although the "Advanced Search" will allow very high-powered searches that will allow certain phrases to be searched for & other words to be used to exclude potential hits.

As you make selections from the "hits" that are displayed, you will need to use the "Click Here To View Item" button near the top of the screen to display the actual image of the page. You can page through the entire document using the index displayed on the left side of the screen. Each page may be printed after being viewed. One interesting sidelight is, when you are at the first web page for the Family History Archive, click on the "Browse the Collection" button. This will display every Family History book that has been digitized and is available in the collection. You can scroll through this list much the same as if you were walking up & down the stacks at the library."

Anti virus programmes is a bit off the subject of Marsh DNA. However, anybody using the internet for any purpose, including genealogy, should take precautions against having their computer infected by computer viruses. I run a commercial virus checking programme continuously, and regularly update it. The following list includes a collection of "odds and ends" relating to Marsh families from different locations. The general intention has been to put references against the location of the earliest know ancestor of the line. Some Marsh families are huge, and cover just about the whole earth, so at this stage I have not cross referenced the families to every known area where they are represented.

It is suggested that genealogists use internet search engines like Google to locate families being researched, as these will enable more specific information to be located more quickly.
